Thanks, Dave --Very Cool.! Although eager to see this myself, I have yet
to see the 4014 when it was hot and running.

But I did have the opportunity for a semi-private tour of the Big Boy when
it was cold, in the UP engine-house in Cheyenne. I even got to explore the
cab.

My brother in law is a train-aficionado and president of the regional model
train club. For several years he has taken me to the annual train-show in
Denver, where the head of the UP 4014 restoration project gives a talk and
slide-show on the project. Although the actual 4014 is not there, the talk
is always fascinating.
I asked if the restoration inserted any modern materials, such as
stainless-steel boiler tubes. He said no, they wanted it to be authentic,
and it is always uncertain what unintended effects may occur when new
materials are inserted into vintage machinery. The full restoration took
over 2-3 years and cost the UP a bundle.

The project has acquired and stored 2 other classic steam locomotives at
the Cheyenne engine house, but their full restoration is "awaiting
funding".
